The name Plückhahn should come after the description of well-known name researchers such as Professor Udolph and Hans Bahlow of an old Occupation, of which the first part of the name stands for picking or plucking (dialect: "plucken"). According to Hans Bahlow the name "Plückhahn" is the profession of a "poultry merchant" (Geflügelhändler) who plucks poultry and sold in retail. Professor Udolph describes the profession of a "cook" who plucks in preparation of its activities poultry first.

Two researchers, two opinions: Hans Bahlow probably meet with his variant "Geflügelhändler" the origin of the name, because they shall have called a self specializing in poultry cooking usually also cook. Otherwise you may also call the profession "Schlachthahn", since in addition to the plucking you have to butcher first.

But perhaps also the saying “A chicken to pick” ("Ein Hühnchen rupfen") is an indication of the origin of the name Plückhahn. As a kind of arbiter in rural areas, the profession could be associated with the solving of difficult cases or unpleasant confrontations.

Precursor behalf of the family name Plückhahn are family names such as Pluschane (1460), Plukkehane (1463) Pluckhane (1563) and Plückhan (1577), which have been identified in the region Parchim since 1460. In Brandenburg two other variants Pflückhahn and Plüghan are known. Through emigration, particularly in the United States and Australia, the last name Plückhahn developed further to name variants such as
Pleckham, Plueckhahn, Plueckhan, Pluckhahn, Pluckhan, Pflückhahn, Plikuhn, Plüghan, Pluckhorn, Pflueckhahn und Pflueckhan.
